About

1475808_10153524176620076_65420325_nI'm a 20-something who wants to follow Jesus, help others find him and his Church, and make a positive difference in the world.

Born and raised in the Eugene-Springfield area in Oregon, I first learned about the Bible and encountered Jesus in various Protestant congregations growing up. Through further study of the Scriptures, Church history, theology, and philosophy, I was convinced that the Catholic Church is the Church that Christ founded and the only church with the fullness of truth and means of grace, and thus the Church I had to enter to be a faithful follower of Christ. The spring of my senior year at Wheaton College my wife and I both joined the Church. (Read more of my story here.)

In addition to a heart for evangelism and ecumenism, we passionately believe and try to live out Catholic social teaching in its fullness, including an openness to life in marriage ("Why We're Contraception-Free"), the protection of life from conception to natural death, the centrality of marriage and family, care for the poor, defense of worker's rights, and respect for creation.

I live in South St Paul, MN with my wife and children.

Lots of writing recently...

BY Brantly Millegan / Updates / 0 COMMENTS

I've been doing a lot of writing in the last few months. I had a piece entitled "The Danger of Good Popes" published on First Things' "On the Square" today. I have another piece, "The Key to the Culture Wars" that has been accepted for publication by Touchstone Magazine (although the publication date has not been set yet). I've had a few pieces published by Catholic Sistas recently as well: "What Apostolic Succession Is and Why It's Absolutely Essential" and "We're Talking About Eternal Salvation Here: 3 Need-to-Know Dogmas You Never Hear About". I've also been writing a lot for Aleteia, from whom I work. You can find a list of those articles here.

4 week course on Catholic Social Teaching

BY Brantly Millegan / Updates / 0 COMMENTS

To all those in the Twin Cities (MN) area:

I will be teaching a 4 week course on Catholic social teaching at St Joseph parish (West St Paul) starting tomorrow, Thursday July 18th, 7-8:30pm. The topic for the first class is a brief history of Catholic social thought, the 6 fundamental principles, and the 4 fundamental values (important groundwork for the other meetings!).

The topics for the three remaining meetings are 'Marriage and Family' (July 25th), 'Work, Economics, Government' (August 1st), and finally 'The International Community, Peace, and the Civilization of Love' (August 8th). (The topics follow the Compendium of the Social Doctrine of the Church.)

Everything is free and open to the public, no registration necessary. Come to all or some of the meetings, and bring your friends! The Church's social teaching is a great way to make connections with other Christians or non-believers.

Catholic Sistas update

I also have a new post "6 Bad Arguments You've Of Course Never Used Before" scheduled to be published on Catholic Sistas next Wednesday, so be on the look-out for that.

HuffPost Live and more Aleteia writing

BY Brantly Millegan / Updates / 0 COMMENTS

Just yesterday, I got the chance to appear on HuffPost Live of The Huffington Post with a great group of people for a segment called "Pope Francis: The First 100 Days". (Other appearances) Here's the video:

And today, I published two new pieces for Aleteia with reactions from Aleteia Experts, one on the Fortnight for Freedom, "Is It About Religious Liberty, or Really About Contraception?", and the other on the developing Edward Snowden situation, "Don't Just Trust the Government, Give Snowden a Hearing". (Other writing)
